Other highlights

  • Our most frequently cited work on Field Plate GaN HEMT is cited as an example simulation by SILVACO on its website https://silvaco.com/examples/tcad/section8/example2/.
  • My online NPTEL UG/PG video course on Solid State Devices is widely viewed across the world and arguably the most popular in India, from among videos on the same topic (Basis: unsolicited viewer feedback)
  • I designed and Initiated “Introduction to Research” as a compulsory course for all research scholars in IITM; conducted over 35 workshops on this topic in IITs, RRI, NITs, IIITs and other institutions; was the lead faculty for the first nationwide ISTE mega-workshop for 10,000 teachers conducted by CDEEP, IIT Bombay on this topic (2012).
  • I designed and conducted solely or jointly over 80 invited highly rated teacher training sessions on various aspects of How teachers can make a difference in 14 institutions including IITs, IISERs, NITs, IIIT.

·         As Chairman 2007 JEE operations in the south zone, I worked with the vice-chairman to cut-down the counselling duration from 12 hrs to 8 hrs / day by processing candidates in the order of their registration numbers rather than All India Rank (first in JEE history).

·         The entrepreneurial venture I undertook on lien (1991-1993) to develop the technology of special purpose diodes was one of the factors which encouraged IIT Madras to amend its leave rules by including a paid leave for entrepreneurial efforts. Others have utilized this facility later.

New Courses / Labs Developed

  • Introduction to Research : India has a large technical manpower. If the impact of this manpower on the research front becomes commensurate with its size, India can be a major player on the global scene. However, research calls for specialized skills in thinking, experimentation, communication and management. A lecture-cum-activity oriented course has been developed to activate these skills among research scholars. The senate of IITM has approved this as a mandatory course for all research scholars in the institute; some other institutes have also initiated this course.
  • Special Semiconductor Devices : This is a graduate level elective course covering high field transport phenomena, and technology, modeling and applications of schottky diodes, transit time diodes, HBTs, HEMTs, CCDs and thermoelectric devices.
  • Semiconductor Device Modeling: This is a compulsory course for graduate students in the Microelectronics stream. It covers basics of semiconductors and operation and modeling of p-n junction, BJT and MOSFET. The course was developed along with another faculty member.
  • Microelectromechanical Systems: This is a graduate level elective course covering materials, micromachining processes; sensing and actuation mechanisms, signal conditioning; mechanics of cantilevers and diaphragms, scaling, and devices such as pressure sensors, microaccelerometers, microfluidics etc. The course was developed along with other faculty members of the microelectronics group.
  • Integrated Electronics Laboratory: This laboratory has a floor area of 90 ft x 45 ft, and is capable of accommodating 120 students at a time. Each workbench of this laboratory has the equipment required to do both hardware and software experiments. All undergraduate and some postgraduate laboratories in the curriculum are conducted here. Other faculty members have also participated in the development of this laboratory.
  • English Communication: This is a course offered by the humanities department on a selective basis to postgraduate students needing improvement in language skills. I proposed this course along with the "Introduction to Research" course as a package for raising the quality of research scholars, and the institute senate accepted my proposal.
