  • Shanti Bhattacharya obtained her Ph.D in Physics from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras in 1997. Her Ph.D work was in the area of Optical Array Illuminators. She was awarded the Alexander von Humboldt award in 1998 and worked at the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany. Her research work there included development of an optical pick-up for CD/DVD systems and design of diffractive optical elements for beam shaping of high-power laser beams. She subsequently joined the MEMS division of Analog Devices, Cambridge, USA, where she worked on the design of an optical MEMS switch. She joined the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Madras in 2005 and is currently a Professor. She has served on the board of OSA (now known as Optica) and is currently an Associate Editor of Optical Engineering and the Journal of Optical Microsystems, as well as being a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Optics (India). Her present research interests are complex light generation using meta and diffractive optics, optical MEMS, and system design for various imaging techniques.
  • While she loves her work with light, she also loves her breaks, which more often than not involve escaping to the Himalayas for a while.

  • Complex light generation using meta and diffractive optics.
  • Optical MEMS.
  • System design for various imaging techniques.

  • Technomentor Award by the India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) 2021 - 2022
  • SERB POWER fellowship given to recognise and reward outstanding women researchers and innovators working in Indian academic institutions and R & D labs. The award is dated 9th February 2022 and is valid for three years.
  • Fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany for the period October 1998-July 2000 to carry out post-doctoral research in the area of applied optics at the Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany.
