Abstract: Photodetectors play a critical role in photonic technology by enabling the conversion of optical signals into electrical signals. Photodetectors provide on-chip power monitoring, calibration, and feedback control, making them indispensable building blocks for scalable and manufacturable photonic integration. A Ge-on-Si photodetector has been fabricated on an 8-inch Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) wafer using silicon photonic foundry Silterra Malaysia. We have investigated key figures of merit on a wafer scale. Wafer-scale investigation is essential for evaluating the uniformity, yield, and manufacturability of Ge-on-Si waveguide photodetectors, as isolated device demonstrations fail to capture the intrinsic process-induced variations arising from heteroepitaxial growth and fabrication non-uniformities. Statistically assessing electrical and optical performance across the wafer provides a realistic assessment of technology readiness, enabling reliable large-scale integration and ensuring reproducibility. In this talk, we will discuss key figures of merit of waveguide photodetector such as dark current, responsivity, bandwidth, etc., on a wafer scale. We will also discuss two different applications toward integrated microwave photonics: (a) microwave photonics filter and (b) optoelectronic mixing. Signal generation, processing, and detection at high frequencies through conventional electronics are complex. It requires complex circuitry and high power consumption, which significantly increases system cost and limits scalability. The utilisation of a photonic technique overcomes these challenges. Additionally, the design and simulation of heterojunction BJT on Silicon-on-Insulator(SOI) will also be presented in this talk toward the implementation of an on-chip transimpedance amplifier (TIA) and other switching applications.
