Experiments

Manuals for experiments 1-3 are available in Scoops.
  1. Waveguide experiment: Measure the wavelength in air and in the waveguide and verify their relationship. (One turn)
  2. Unknown impedance: Measurement of unknown impedance in a transmission line. (one turn)
  3. VSWR: Standing wave and VSWR measurement of a given load. (one turn)
  4. Antenna Fabrication: Patch antenna fabrication. Manual, and reference notes: Antenna Theory by C. Balanis (3Ed, pg : 816-831). (one turn)
  5. [To be done after completing (4)] Resonant frequency and radiation pattern: Measurement of resonant frequency using a network analyzer, and measurement of patch antenna radiation pattern using a spectrum analyzer. Manual. (one turn)
  6. Computational experiment -- Periodic structures: Study of Photonic crystals using open-source software: mpb (frequency domain eigen solver). Manual. (three turns)
  7. Computational experiment -- Wave scattering: Study of scattering and diffraction using open-source software: meep (finite difference time domain solver). Manual. (two turns)

Grading
  • Computational : 30%
  • Lab Reports : 10%
  • Lab Test : 20%
  • Written Test or VIVA : 40%
Policies
  • If you haven't done the theory course (EEL207), you will not be allowed to do the lab.
  • On any given day, there will be five groups doing experiments 1-5 and five groups doing experiments 6-7. Since experiment 4 is a pre-requisite to experiment 5, there will be a couple of weeks when two groups will do experiment 4 simultaneously.
  • All reports must be prepared using LaTeX using this tex file and template. You can either install latex locally, or paste the tex file into a website such as Overleaf to prepare your document online. Keep your reports concise and informative. NO handwritten reports will be entertained. One report per group. Reports must be submitted one week from having performed the experiment. A penalty of 5% of the maximum marks will be given for every day of delay in submission.
  • Lab reports for experiments 1-5 will be submitted to the respective head TA (asterisk above). Lab reports for experiments 6,7 will be submitted via a plagiarism detection software, Turnitin. Penalties for copying will be severe.
  • All emails to the instructors or TAs must have EEP307 in the subject line.
