Interactions between electromagnetic waves in nonlinear media will be the basis of our next generation of optical devices and communication networks. With a careful interplay between dispersion and amplification, we enhance the interactions of optical fields in highly nonlinear fibre (HNLF), or in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), to achieve demonstrations of
