Title: Differential Protection with Communication Latency and Data Synchronization Errors

Abstract :

The use of differential protection, with synchronized analog quantities, current and voltage, at local and remote ends of transmission and distribution lines has evolved from pilot-wire based, point-to-point scheme for short lines to communication-assisted protection schemes for long and complex transmission and distribution lines. Synchronization of analog quantities is essential for proper functioning of differential protection and error in synchronization will lead to mis-operation, non-operation or mal-operation of differential protection. Synchronization angle error may occur due to communication latency, jitter and wander.

A mechanism to estimate synchronization angle error by calculating the load correction constant under synchronized conditions and using a closed form equation is proposed. This is then used to compensate the estimated synchronization angle errors between local and remote end analog quantities. The method is validated using simulation and from field data. With the growing use of communication assisted differential protection schemes, especially for lines interfacing Inverter Based Resources, use of the proposed method will ensure increased availability and reliability of differential protection.
