Title: Caching of Age-Sensitive Dynamic Content Under Unknown Utility

Abstract :

Dynamic content on digital platforms is updated in real-time due to user interactions and other factors. Caching servers often use shorter time-to-live (TTL) timers for dynamic content to maintain freshness, but this can increase fetch costs and compromise system performance. In this work, we present a caching system with an \emph{unknown} age-based utility that balances fetch and storage costs by caching items only as long as their freshness yields utility. We formulate a reward-based optimization problem to learn the optimal caching duration that maximizes the long-term cumulative reward. We propose two caching policies and analyze their performance in terms of the expected time to learn the unknown utility function and the expected loss in reward during the learning phase. Extensive numerical experiments are conducted to validate our analytical results.
