Title: Detection of Underwater Acoustics using Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS)

Abstract :

Underwater sensing plays a critical role in safeguarding national coastlines by detecting unauthorized vessels, including ships and submarines. Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), which leverages standard fiber-optic cables as dense arrays of acoustic sensors, offers a promising solution for intrusion detection. However, existing literature provides limited insight into key challenges such as the acoustic-to-strain transduction mechanism on fiber sheaths, computationally efficient real-time signal-processing algorithms, and source localization techniques. In this seminar, we present an efficient real-time signal-processing algorithm that preserves detection fidelity. We also discuss the results of a feasibility study demonstrating the capability of DAS to detect underwater acoustic events, highlighting its potential for maritime surveillance applications.
