Title: Equivalent Circuit Model of Micro-ring Modulator for Electronic-Photonic Design Automation (EPDA)

Abstract :

Silicon photonics has emerged as a transformative platform for realising high-speed, energy-efficient optical interconnects and advanced computing architectures, including neuromorphic computing. Its compatibility with CMOS fabrication processes allows seamless integration of photonic and electronic components on the same chip. Despite this potential, the co-design of electro-optic systems remains a significant bottleneck due to the lack of mature, SPICE-level simulation tools that can accurately model optical device behaviour within standard electronic design automation (EDA) flows.

In this talk, a unified SPICE-compatible simulation framework is proposed, targeting key silicon photonic components such as waveguides, directional couplers, cavities, and modulators. The developed models incorporate essential physical mechanisms, including carrier injection, carrier depletion, self-heating, shift in resonant wavelength, and nonlinear interactions. These models are implemented in the form of large-signal time-domain equivalent circuits that can be simulated using SPICE to test both large-signal and small-signal behaviour of the devices. The proposed framework enables scalable circuit-level simulation of hybrid electro-optic systems and paves the way for the development of photonic process design kits (PDKs) with SPICE-compatible compact models, accelerating the adoption of silicon photonics in commercial and research domains.
