Title: Data Aggregator and User Equipment for 5G Remote Radio Head.

Abstract :

A comprehensive overview of the hardware design and development of two key components used in the 5G testbed project: The Data Aggregator (DA) and the User Equipment (UE). The first part focuses on the architectural and physical design of the DA PCB, which acts as an interface between the Baseband Unit (BBU) and the Digital Front-End (DFE) PCB. Key components include the Xilinx FPGA, power management ICs, DDR4 memory, clocking circuits, Ethernet interfaces, and other supporting circuitry. Design aspects such as power sequencing, clock structure, routing constraints, thermal management, and PCB stack-up are addressed. The second part describes the custom-designed UE PCB, integrating a 5G modem (Telit FN990) and a processing unit (Raspberry Pi CM4). Operating in the N78 band (SA mode), the UE receives 5G signals from the RRH and enables internet access for the processor via USB communication. The architecture, PCB layout, stack-up, simulation results, testing, and mechanical design of the UE are detailed.The design of both DA and UE involves interdisciplinary challenges, requiring in-depth understanding of high-speed digital design, signal integrity, and RF communication technologies
