Title: Resilience Enhancement of Cyber-Physical Power Systems Against Cyber Attacks

Abstract :

This talk presents a resilience-focused approach to protect Cyber-Physical Power Systems (CPPS) from cyber-attacks. The increasing use of communication and control technologies in power systems has improved efficiency and reliability, but it has also made the grid more vulnerable to cyber threats. Unlike natural disasters, cyber-attacks are targeted, intelligent, and often coordinated, which makes them harder to detect and manage. This calls for a shift from traditional reliability-based planning to a resilience-based strategy that can handle and recover from such disruptions.

The research focuses on understanding critical vulnerabilities in the physical layer of CPPS and developing methods to assess how well the system can withstand and recover from cyber-induced disruptions. A graph-based method using the Effective Graph Resistance (EGR) metric is used to study the system's connectivity and robustness. Changes in EGR under node-removal scenarios help pinpoint the most critical components. Alongside this, a probabilistic reasoning method is being developed to estimate how likely different cyber-attacks are and how they might spread. This helps in planning defenses and taking quick actions during an attack. Together, these methods aim to support the design of smarter, more secure, and resilient power systems.
