Title: Protection of Inverter Based Resources During Delayed Voltage Recovery Event

Abstract :

The proliferation of Inverter-Based Resources (IBR) in the grid results in voltage recovery events. Both Grid Following Inverters (GFLI) and Grid Forming Inverters (GFMI) are used in Inverter Based Resources (IBR) respectively. Grid Following Inverters (GFLI) have instability issues during weak grid scenarios. As a result, Grid Forming Inverters (GFMI) are preferred. The value of GFMI in mitigating delayed voltage recovery events has been analyzed in the literature.

Droop controlled GFMI are modelled in positive sequence and their models are validated with the literature. For simulating delayed voltage recovery events, single phase induction motor dynamic model is chosen over composite load model as the latter introduces numerical iteration issues. Positive sequence droop controlled GFMI with Virtual Impedance (VI) current limiting technique is modelled and results are validated with the literature. The effects of different current limiting techniques of droop controlled GFMI on the delayed voltage recovery events are analyzed in this work for an IEEE 14 bus test system.
