Title: Operation and Control of Hybrid Microgrid Systems with Distributed Energy Resources Integration using a Novel 3-port Converter Topology

Abstract :

This study proposes a novel three-port converter topology to enhance power exchange among Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and the grid in hybrid microgrid systems. It addresses major challenges in microgrid implementation, including seamless mode transitions, plug-and-play DER integration, power balance, and voltage and frequency stability. Unlike traditional interlinking converters that rely on multi-stage conversion and complex communication links, the proposed topology enables single-stage power conversion, improving efficiency and reducing control complexity. A power management strategy is developed to optimize energy flow under diverse conditions, while a predictive offline MPPT scheme reduces computational and sensor requirements. A hardware prototype featuring a DFIG wind emulator validates the system under real-world conditions. To address higher losses in specific switches, a closed-form loss minimization algorithm is formulated and integrated into control using a port current angle adjustment strategy. The design is extensively validated using Hardware-in-the-Loop simulators and real-time controllers, confirming its effectiveness for advanced microgrid applications.
