Title: Modelling and Simulation of Virtualization in Power system Protection

Abstract :

Network Grid Protection with increased Distributed Energy Resources (DER) is a challenging task with increase in the number of protection devices, protection settings, procurement of new devices, technological advancement. etc. Recent technological developments in power system protection has evolved over years to relays with Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED) with IEC61850 protocol with process bus, merging units, etc. Data processing plays a key role in power system operation, control and protection engineers leading to a standardised development in intelligent virtual protection system.

The seminar talk explores the proposed workin developing new concept of ‘virtual power system protection’ for a typical distribution substation. In treating the complete substation as complete object. Virtual power system protection (VPPP) or virtual proactive relays (VPR) is gaining more importance as it leverages between software defined and virtualized platforms to host critical circuit protection functions thus offering agility, flexibility and programmability for modern grids. The work discusses the use of data processing in power system protection for classification of faults. The work would be validated by performing simulation from ‘comtrade data’ generated from PSCAD, parallelly historical data from existing substation from utility would be explored.
