Title: Integrated Sensing System for Wireless Charging of Electric Personal Transporters

Abstract :

Wireless charging is becoming increasingly popular for electric personal transporters (EPTs), requiring charging pad arrays that support flexible parking and charging. Effective sensing systems are essential for detecting and identifying vehicles, assessing receiver alignment with charging coils, and detecting foreign metal objects on the charging pad surface. Existing sensing techniques, designed for larger electric vehicles, are unsuitable for EPTs due to structural differences.

This talk will present a technique where the charging coil itself is used as a sensing element, eliminating the need for modifications and vehicle-side access. During sensing, the charging pad coil is excited at a slightly lower frequency than the power transfer frequency. The resulting input current and phase signature provide insights into vehicle identification, position, alignment, and foreign object detection. A prototype was developed and tested across various EPTs and real-world scenarios, demonstrating high sensitivity, low power consumption, and robustness against interference from wireless power transfer. Details will be discussed in the presentation.
