Title: Convex optimization based design of PI controller through Eigen-structure assignment for Resonant systems

Abstract :

Resonant systems are prone to large amplitude oscillations when subjected to external disturbances. These oscillations can lead to crossing the elastic limits and eventually breakdown. Systems with sensors and actuators acting in pairs at the same spatial location are referred to as collocated systems. Active feedback control design refers to the process of designing controllers to actively adjust the behavior of a system based on its current state or output, with the goal of achieving desired specifications. This talk will be focussed on the design of Proportional+Integral(PI) controllers for resonant systems with collocated sensor/actuator pairs to dampen the resonant modes.

Design procedures for standard controllers like PI have been either non-convex or ad hoc based on numerical experiments. The controller design is done through an eigenstructure assignment where the closed loop system with the PI controller is matched with that of a desired reference system. Eigen structure assignment yields a system of overdetermined linear equations in the controller parameters. A set of Linear matrix inequalities(LMIs) involving controller parameters are derived such that closed loop stability is ensured. A convex optimization problem is formulated with these LMI constraints such that a unique solution of controller parameters is obtained even if desired closed loop specifications cannot be achieved with PI controllers.
