Title: Autonomous metasurface-based wireless power transfer for dynamic misalignment correction

Abstract :

This talk will explore various aspects of wireless power transfer (WPT) systems, ranging from traditional two-coil setups to advanced metasurface-based configurations. We designed a two-coil WPT system that achieves up to 92% efficiency when the transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) are perfectly aligned; however, efficiency drops to as low as 1% under complete misalignment. Our findings highlight that the Rx’s location within a WPT system directly impacts power transfer efficiency. Therefore, a Rx placed at a non-optimized location makes the system ineffective. To address this, we propose an artificial structure known as a metasurface, which overcomes misalignment issues by exploiting near-field beamforming properties with dynamic capacitive loading.

While metasurfaces have been widely used to improve WPT performance, most existing designs require prior knowledge of the location of misaligned Rx. To overcome this limitation, we present an autonomous WPT system capable of predicting the location of misaligned Rx, precisely within 10 cm using a convolutional neural network approach. Additionally, we develop a technique to calculate the optimal capacitive loading of the metasurface to direct electromagnetic fields towards the Rx. Potential applications for this system include wireless charging of electric vehicles, industrial robots, medical implants, UAVs, etc.
