Band pass data transmission: Geometric representation of signals? coherent detection of signals in noise. Correlation receiver and matched filter receiver. Probability of error and receiver implementation of BPSK, BFSK, QPSK, MSK, M-ary PSK and M-ary FSK. Union bound approximation for the probability of error. Detection of signals with unknown phase. Spectra of digitally modulated signals. Carrier and clock recovery methods. Error control coding: Linear block codes: Generator and parity check matrices. Syndrome calculation. Error detection and error correction using block codes. Conventional codes: Generator and transfer function matrices. State and trellis diagrams. Maximum likelihood decoding of conventional codes: The Viterbi algorithm. Trellis coded modulation
