| Faculty Positions |
| Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Madras, India |
| We invite applications for faculty positions from candidates with proven record of excellence in research.
We look for individuals with the potential and passion for high quality teaching and research in all areas of
Electrical Engineering. |
| I. What are the positions available? What are the minimum qualifications required? |
Faculty positions: Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor.
Track schemes: Visiting, Visiting (tenure-track), Contract and Permanent (tenure).
The eligibility criteria are given below (in addition to a PhD Degree with a first class in the preceding
degree). We expect that at least one of the applicant's degrees is in Electrical Engineering. However, we
would be interested even in those who do not satisfy this norm provided they are exceptional and can give
convincing reasons (in the application) to pursue a career with us.

Journal publications).

|
| II. Other requirements |
|
At this point in time, visiting (tenure-track) and permanent (tenure) positions are open only to Indian
Nationals and OCI card holders.
Visiting faculty positions are open to people of any nationality.
Contract positions are also open to people of any nationality. While for foreign nationals this is not a
tenure-track scheme, the contract may be renewed.
A brief note on Visiting (tenure-track) position: A permanent faculty position can be offered only after
an advertisement in newspapers, followed by an interview. The Institute normally advertises for these
positions every alternate year. So as to not lose out on outstanding candidates, we have introduced
`Visiting (tenure-track)’ positions, which are offered throughout the year. Those recruited on such a
position can appear before a selection committee when one is constituted (usually within two years), to be
considered for a permanent (tenure) position. Once their position is ratified (by the selection committee),
their service is deemed to start from the day they joined the Institute.
|
| III. How to get in touch? |
| For positions under the Tenure/Contract tracks: Please be on the lookout for an advertisement (on
our Institute website www.iitm.ac.in or in the newspapers) and apply in the prescribed format. Be sure
to submit the application so that it reaches the Institute by the deadline stipulated in the advertisement.
For positions under Visiting Faculty Scheme: Please send your CV (including the date of birth)
with a list of published/accepted papers (list journal and conference papers separately), and a two-
page summary (in PDF format) of your research accomplishments to hodee@ee.iitm.ac.in. Attach soft
copies of two research papers that portray your most significant work, along with a research proposal
(maximum two pages) describing your future plans. In your proposal, make sure that you bring out the
importance of your research area and specifics of your previous work and achievements. Please provide
the names and addresses (including email and telephone numbers) of at least three referees who
can comment on your technical abilities. Don’t forget to request the referees to send their letters to
hodee@ee.iitm.ac.in. |
| IV. After that …. |
| Your suitability for a faculty position in our Department will be discussed by the departmental New
Faculty Evaluation Committee (NFEC). Upon a positive recommendation from NFEC, we would
invite you to visit us for a discussion on your research activities, current and future plans. A one hour
research presentation (Research Seminar) by you would be the highlight of this visit. We will be able
to fund travel only within India and host you on campus. Please plan to spend about two days with us -
this allows adequate time to interact with department faculty and be bowled over by our verdant campus
in Southern Chennai.
Research Seminar: This is the most important part of the interaction. Provide a background of your
career, starting from College. Follow this up with some background in your research area before
discussing your contributions. Since the audience will consist of researchers with varied backgrounds,
you should plan an appropriate introduction. You must balance your talk so that it appeals to “specialists”
as well as “non-specialists” in the audience, while highlighting your research contributions and
achievements. Typically, you may like to present an overview of the breadth of your work and discuss
in greater depth, a specific contribution. You should make it amply clear that you have the ability both
to conduct research and to present the results of your research well. Please plan the seminar for about 45
minutes duration (plan your slides accordingly).
Don’t forget to include, apart from details of past accomplishments, a clear picture of how you intend
to contribute to the department. Plan to spend up to 5 minutes of your time on this aspect (mentioning it
explicitly in the talk outline as future plans, or statement of purpose or research proposal).
Meetings with faculty: We will also schedule interactions with faculty in your (and allied) research areas.
These meetings, while enabling you to discuss your work in detail, will also provide you an opportunity to
learn about the various initiatives in the department. We are keen to have good faculty on board, and would
like to find out how their experience and research abilities will enrich the department. |
| V. Then what? |
| We will communicate our decision, within a few weeks of your visit. Upon a positive outcome, the
Administration may take up to eight weeks to send the formal offer letter. The offer is usually valid for
a year. Faculty who join us could also make a proposal for a seed research grant of up to
Rupees two million. |
