Title: A Generalized Framework for Modeling and Performance Analysis of Repeated / Regenerated Multihop Optical Links with Inherent Noise and Jitter Accumulation

Abstract

Almost half a century of explosive growth in optical communications saw several repeater and regenerative schemes introduced and many prospering - starting from the early implementations of optical-to-electrical (OEO) repeaters, maturing through Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFA), and is looking brightly toward all-optical 3R regenerators. We propose a general framework for modeling noise and jitter accumulation across different repetitive and regenerative schemes, broadly classified as 1R, 2R, and 3R. The talk will cover brief analytical results for each, followed by a general numerical paradigm using the Bit Error Rate (BER) buildup across the categories at the primary parameter. Comparisons of PDF evolution patterns of noise and jitter highlight key properties of each category. This is accomplished by extending and reinterpreting a lightweight numerical model working directly with the noise/jitter pdf. This has the immediate benefit of being better than most of the heavy, implementation-dependent FEM/FTDT techniques. The framework is robust in accommodating various noise, jitter PDFs, and some intensity nonlinearity. We also propose techniques to accommodate noise-jitter interplay in the models and framework is also shown to be extendable to PAM4 links. The framework should broadly apply to various multihop optical systems, including Free-Space and underwater links. Finally, the framework is scalable and extendable, enabling it to stay relevant in a future landscape.
