Title: Inverse rendering based 3D reconstruction of a transparent surface

Abstract

The last few years saw an exploding growth and interest in 3D reconstruction using radiance fields and related approaches. Algorithms have been designed for challenging scenarios such as specular materials, dynamic scene content, etc. However, refractive objects have received much less attention in comparison. Here, we will briefly discuss what makes reconstructing refractive objects challenging. We will apply an inverse-rendering-based approach to reconstruct the 3D surface of water droplets randomly placed on a transparent surface like glass/acrylic. We will discuss the data acquisition setup and show some results on real data.

About the speaker:
Prasan has been working as an engineer at Sony Semiconductor Solutions Europe since March 2023. He is part of the Computational Sensing Group at Sony Stuttgart Technology Center in Germany. His group works to develop applications for the novel imaging sensors designed at Sony. Before joining Sony, he was a Postdoc at the University of Bonn, working with Prof. Matthias Hullin. As a postdoc, he developed a system and algorithm for 3D reconstruction of randomly placed water droplets on a transparent surface. Prasan completed his PhD from Computational Imaging Lab at IIT Madras in 2021. During his PhD, he worked on the reconstruction of high-speed videos from event sensors and light-field videos from stereo cameras.
