Power transformers form an important component in the power system network. The reliability and life of oil filled transformers rely basically on its operating condition and proper insulation design. One of the major problems which can cause severe damage to the transformer insulation is due to hot spot formation where the local temperature can rise more than 200oC. In addition, Diffusion of copper sulfide diffusion into Oil Impregnated Pressboard (OIP)material is also one of the major concern. Aging of OIP due to hotspot formation in transformer causing rise of transformer oil temperature thereby causing aging of pressboard material. This characteristic variation can cause local field enhancement in the bulk volume of insulation there by reducing corona/ surface discharge inception voltage. Thus, it is essentially understanding the characteristic variation of insulation material. Based on scope of above work, methodical experimental studies were carried out and the results of the study will be highlighted during presentation.
