Abstract

An integrated optical flat-top bandpass filter device using SOI waveguide is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The device is basically a multi-mode rib waveguide integrated with comb grating(s), which is adiabatically interfaced with input/output single-mode waveguides operating in TE-polarization (1525 nm ≤ λ ≤1625 nm). The comb grating acts like a DBR for guided modes at their corresponding phase matched wavelength bands. The calculated wavelength passband between two consecutive stopbands has characteristically flat-top and few ripples at the edges. The desired spectral width of the passband is obtained by suitable adjustment of grating design parameters. Our study shows that the spectral width of the passband is better controlled/reconfigured by cascading two comb gratings with slightly varying grating periods. Such filter device will find many useful applications in the area of optical interconnects and other allied fields.

We have fabricated devices with passband widths varying from sub-ten nanometers to few tens of nanometers with in the wavelength range mentioned above. The observed passband to stopband extinction ratio is ~ 35 dB with band-edge roll-off ~ 70 dB/nm.  The ripples across the passband of fabricated devices are found to be varying from 1 dB to 5 dB. However, this can be reduced by ensuring uniformity in grating structure as well as better impedance matching with the input/output access waveguides.
