About the Test and Interview
The syllabi have been given on the site. Please study the relevant portions. You are, of course, expected to know the entire curriculum in general, but these are the areas of focus.
Ultimately the decision on your application and interview comes from the administration. So all of this – shortlisting, test and interview – are provisional to approval of your candidature by the academic section of IIT Madras. If you have claimed a reserved category, you must bring proof of the same. Also bring your marksheets and degree certificates, as they will be checked if you are shortlisted for interview.
Bring documents required by your type of registration as mentioned in the instructions. If you have done a project in your UG or PG programme, you can bring it to show. However, be prepared to explain the technical details of the project when you do so. If you have work experience related project or journal publications, please do bring them to show to the committee and discuss.

GUIDE SELECTION POLICY in EE DEPARTMENT

The different streams in Electrical Engineering follow slightly different procedures in allotting students to guides. These are described below for the information of prospective students.

EE1 – Communications and Signal Processing

  1. Students are given a form in which they indicate areas of interest and list three preferred guides.
  2. Students are asked whether they wish to decline if their guide preference was not met.
  3. After the interviews, the faculty orally communicate their student preferences to the convener.
  4. Finally, a simple matching between the two sets of preferences is done to perform guide allocation.

EE2 – Power Engineering

  1. At the time of interview, candidates have to give areas of expertise and names of probable guides (3 in priority).
  2. List of faculty looking for students is provided
  3. Guides assigned during interview taking student choice and guide availability into account.

EE3 – Microelectronic Devices and VLSI

  1. New students spend a couple of days of their first week meeting with all the faculty who have shown interest to guide a MS/PhD scholar. The list of faculty who are willing to take a student is circulated among students when they join.
  2. After meeting ALL the interested faculty, students list down their choice and submit it to the coordinator.
  3. The coordinator and faculty meet to assign students their respective advisors.

EE4 – Control and Instrumentation

  1. During the interview, students are asked which faculty (in Control/Robotics/Sensors/Biomedical/PSI) he/she wants to work with.
  2. If the candidate’s talent (assessed from the interview & written test) matches with their wish, the area and faculty asked by the candidate is given.
  3. Otherwise we try to convince the student that he/she must choose one of the areas wherein his/her native talent is demonstrated.
  4. If the student accepts our offer, the same is recommended. If the candidate insists that he/she wants only his/her wish and the committee finds the candidates talent in that area is lacking, he/she is not selected.

EE5 – RF, Photonics and Optical Communications

  1. Students are given a form to fill with their choice of guides (and priority). These choices are confirmed during the interview.
  2. All faculty members interested in taking students, participate in the interview. If the student performs well especially in the chosen area of research, he/she will be given their first choice of faculty.
  3. If their responses were better in another area, they are then assigned to the relevant faculty member.
  4. If more students opt for a faculty member than the faculty member is willing to take, their second or higher choices will be considered.
  5. In cases where the faculty who are in the students’ choice list do not select him/her, the student can be offered a chance to interview with another faculty member.

Criteria for Shortlisted July-November 2015 Session In addition to the eligibility criteria listed in admissions brochure for the MS/PhD program, the Electrical Engineering department applies the following Criteria
