Prof. Shankar Ramamurti of Yale University is awarded the IITM Distinguished Alumnus Award
In recognition of Prof. Shankar Ramamurti‘s academic excellence and research contributions in the field of particle and condensed matter physics, IIT Madras and its alumni are proud to confer on him the Distinguished Alumnus Award.
Prof. Ramamurti obtained his B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering from IIT Madras in 1969 and his Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from University of California, Berkeley in 1974. He was a Harvard Junior Fellow and winner of Julius Edgar Lilienfeld prize from American Physical Society. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and has authored more than a hundred journal articles and three books.
At the IITM Award Ceremony, one could see the funny side of Prof. Ramamurti, when he candidly described the problems he had in convincing his father, on his decision to pursue Physics for a career. It was also clear from his IITM batch mates (who were present at the ceremony), that he was an avid public speaker while at IITM.
All in all, it was a pleasant ceremony and to have another Distinguished Alum from our department is truly happy. Looking at this alum, one can summarise that “From EE department of IITM, anything is possible.”
